Item details

Vintage from the 1960s

Materials

Plastic, Metal, Rubber

This is a gray and cream Royal Safari manual typewriter in excellent condition.

Made in the mid-to-late 1960s, the Royal Safari was part of Royal's first line of manual typewriters that featured partially plastic bodies. They came in multiple versions, such as the Aristocrat, Custom, and this Safari. They, like prior Royals, were all reliable, workhorse machines that proved to be popular sellers.

As with all my machines, I have cleaned, lubricated, and adjusted this typewriter. It is ready to type as soon as you get it home.

**COSMETIC CONDITION**
This Royal Safari vintage typewriter is in excellent cosmetic condition. The gray and cream machine has distinctly mid-century lines and curves that make Royals of this time so sought after by designers and decorators. There are some paint scratches and blemishes here and there, but nothing significant.

This Royal typewriter also has a working fiberglass carrying case in working condition. However, the case has a crack and broken piece on the bottom that has been repaired poorly. The damage doesn't hinder the ability of the case to hold or secure the typewriter.

**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
Mechanically, this Royal typewriter types perfectly. The keys are responsive and light, all the control features work as they should, and the platen (roller), though it has hardened some, is still in good shape. This machine is reliable and easy on a typist's fingers.

The only mechanical issue at the moment is that the ribbon color selector isn't allowing for a two-tone ribbon to print the lower color. This means that with a, for example, black and red ribbon, you can only print black.

This isn't a significant issue, as the machine still types well, but I'll try to make the repair if I can, and will update this listing once finished.

**RECOMMENDED BUYER**
I believe this Royal Safari working typewriter would be ideal for a typist, decorator, or anyone interested in a vintage typewriter but who doesn't know a lot about them. The colors of this machine make it a wonderful design element, and its reliability and usability make it appealing to anyone who wants to see what all the excitement is about typewriters.

I'd recommend this machine for anyone interested in a vintage typewriter, whether you want to use it a lot, a little, or none at all.

**INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING**
I also ship internationally, so please contact me for a quote if you are interested in any of my typewriters and are located outside of the United States.

Thank you for looking, and feel free to ask me any questions you might have.

Returns and exchange details

I sell vintage and antique typewriters that are no longer made, some of which are 100 years old or more. As much as I'd love to be able to tell you that they will always be problem-free and last forever, I can't, because they won't.

Older machines can develop problems without notice, even if they're properly maintained and loved. I promise to accurately describe, photograph, or video any typewriter I sell. If you want additional photos or have questions about anything, all you have to do is ask. You can also inspect the machines in person if you are in the Kansas City area.

So, to make a long story short, I will accept most returns, but I do ask that you pay for return shipping. If your typewriter does not work as it should upon arrival, I'll accept a return unless it was sold as a display model. Also, if you do experience a problem, many times there is a simple repair that will solve it. I can often walk you through the repair so you don't have to send the typewriter back.

Shipping policies

Unless otherwise agreed to or specified, I'll ship all typewriters via USPS, FedEx, or UPS at my discretion. I will use the method that is most economical for my buyers, and will ship to anywhere in the continental United States.

If you are located outside of the United States, please contact me before making a purchase. I can usually arrange shipping, but I don't want to make any promises I cannot keep.

As far as packaging goes, shipping typewriters is notoriously problematic for some people. Typewriters have heavy moving parts (the carriages) that can be easily damaged if not properly secured. I lock the carriages on all shipped typewriters if they have that feature, but I may also secure them with additional safety measures. I use a variety of techniques to make sure your machine gets to you in exactly the same condition it was in when I boxed it up.

Please be advised that some typewriters are very heavy, and can weigh 40 pounds or more. These heavier machines naturally have higher shipping costs associated with them.

Additional policies

A lot of vintage stuff, especially typewriters, is beautiful and awesome. But I suppose you already knew that.
