Item details

Gem type: Quartz

This piece is a classic example of a Japan Law Twin Quartz. Like a lot of the quartz from this area, such as our Washington Camp Tessin, there is a secondary druzy quartz growth on the surface, giving it a beautiful frosty appearance. This specimen is not only large but in magnificent condition as well. There is both Aragonite and Hematite growth over the secondary quartz.

Mined by Schwartz Fine Minerals this year from our newly opened fee dig site in Duquesne Arizona. For more information on this site see our Facebook

The Japan Law is the only common twinning law of quartz where the two twin crystals are visible as individuals. In a Japan Law twin the c-axis of two crystals meet at an angle of almost 90. The result is usually a V-shaped twin, rarely a slightly oblique cross, this piece being a V twin. Very often the Japan Law twin looks platy (flat), because the crystal grows faster between the two arms.

This specimen measures 38x46x6mm or almost 2 inches wide.
