I have had this old poem by Valine Hobbs running around in my head for weeks. It begins like this, "One day when we went walking I found a dragon's tooth" and continues to chronicle the imaginative finds of a little girl. Because my childhood included many walks in the woods with my Dad and just as many of my own special finds, I decided to create a group of fairies to celebrate those finds. This is the sixth in a series that I've been working on.
I found a collection of antique wooden bobbins in my sister's antique shop and hauled them home with an idea already forming.
I covered this bobbin with a page from an antique English literature book. I attached a head and arms that are also antiques excavated from the grounds of German doll factories operating between 1890 and 1920. She's a black haired beauty with bright blue eyes and rosy cheeks.
I've adorned her with a hat and collar from an old crocheted tablecloth, a bit of ivory lace and a yellow colored ribbon. I added a tiny yellow satin rose to her hat.
The bottom of the bobbin is ringed with a collection of old brown and tan vintage buttons. She needed to be able to fly so I added wings of rusted wire.
She's off to take part in a secret fairy ceremony during which the magic text will be read again. She's carrying a scroll made from a pretty twisted grapevine wrapped with a a bit from an old text. (And yes, I found that pretty twisted grapevine "one day when we went walking".)
She's 7 inches tall and ready to come spread some magic your way.
