This cheese board derives its wonderful and unique shape from the cross section of the tree it was made from. The tree was growing at the edge of a stream, and the slice I used for this board was taken from a point where the trunk of the tree was merging into the root system. There was one pronounced buttress root that reached down the bank of the stream, and this is what forms the handle of this board. It's almost as if nature designed the shape of this tree specifically to make a great cheese board. As with all of my products, the tree was dead when I harvested it; elm trees are fairly common in my area, but like this one, they generally succumb to Dutch elm disease before growing very large.

As you can see, this board has a beautiful swirling grain that echoes the outer shape of the piece. The outer bark is gone, but the under-bark has a lot of rich coloration and a pleasing texture. The board is finished with a food-safe penetrating finish.

This board is 12-1/4 inches long measuring up from the tip of the handle, 8-3/4 inches wide and 5/8 inches thick (31 x 22.5 x 1.6 cm). The underside of the handle is slightly raised, making it easy to pick up and set down.

There are plenty of wooden cheese boards you might purchase, but you're unlikely to ever find another one* whose form is as delightfully natural and organic as this one, while also being eminently practical.

*Except, of course, for another cheese board in my Etsy shop, which was cut from a little lower in the same tree. That board is a bit bigger than this one, but this one is a nicer looking piece of wood, IMO. That board is available here: www.etsy.com/listing/690760816
