Vintage from the 1950s

Dimensions

Cup capacity: 4 Fluid ounces

Material

Ceramic

This is a lovely dainty demitasse size cup and saucer made of a beautifully sheer translucent porcelain. The base and edges of the cup and edges of the saucer are subtly and gracefully scalloped. The background color of the interior of the cup and the top of the saucer is a mild and pleasing blush pink, and both surfaces are decorated with a scattering of yellow flower blossoms with their foliage

The bottoms of the cup and saucer are marked with a lined image of a flower blossom inside a square with the word JAPAN below it. I have been unable to identify this particular mark, but the use of the word JAPAN indicates that it was made either between 1921-1941, or after the Occupied Japan period in the late 1940s and early 50s. Because of the similarity of the style to some of the Occupied Japan pieces it is my guess that it was made in the 1950s shortly after the occupation ended.

Cup = 1 3/4"h x 3"w at top and Saucer = 4 3/4"w Both pieces are in excellent condition (only one tiny flea bite to the rim of the cup that could be easily camouflaged with a dot of gold Sharpie ink), and the pieces are a rare enough design to make the pair a distinctive addition to a demitasse collection, or a lovely piece to use with a mixed group of cups and saucers at a tea party.

Think of this pair as a good china pair for your home, or with the touch up I recommended as a lovely one-of-a-kind vintage gift for a friend.
