To be perfectly honest, times are tough so I'm lowering prices. Previously listed at $485.00, I'd sell this beautiful ostrich egg for $300.00. Don't know how long this sale will last, but for now, it's on.

This spectacular ostrich pysanka was made using the traditional Ukrainian pysanky technique of writing on an eggshell with hot beeswax while alternately bathing the egg in various colors of dye. Once all the flowers were written, the egg was bathed in a mild acid which etched into the shell so that the flowers are raised slightly off the shell. Once the wax was removed an artist's varnish was added to prevent yellowing and protect the egg from UV rays.

Flowers represent the female principle;love, elegance, charity, beauty, and wisdom. Grapes represent a deep, loyal love. Sunflowers represent a love of God, as the sunflower follows the sun's path across the sky. Motherhood is also denoted. Dots symbolize the stars in the heavens. Poppies are very common in Ukrainian decoration.

When I received this egg, I noticed the hole at the bottom was larger than usual, but the egg was such a great shape and consistency that I knew it would make an awesome pysanka. With the etching, this egg feels great in your hands.

It's signed and dated at the bottom and will be carefully cushioned in a tin can (a really big one) which will, in turn, be cushioned in the shipping box.
