These coconut shell tiles, hand-painted with the ancient symbol for Om, are intended to have diverse application, whether your thing is scrapbooking, card-making, jewelry-making, knitting, or sewing garments or accessories.

To believers of the Hindu faith and to those who practise yoga and meditiation, Om is the sacred sound of the universe.

The symbol is known and loved around the world and is a popular design feature of art, jewelry, t-shirts and yoga wear.

These tiles are hand-painted in Bali, home to most of Indonesia's small Hindu minority and long considered a centre of spiritual energy. The island is also home to countless yoga retreats and meditation centres.

With a small hole in each corner, you can easily weave one or more into a macrame bracelet or stitch them to a beanie, a scarf, or a yoga mat bag.

They're fine for use on garments and washable accessories as you can safely put them in a washing machine. The paint won't wash off and the coconut shell won't buckle.

They'd also look great on organic wedding invitations. If you want bulk quantities, please order well in advance of the deadline for sending out the invitations. Please convo me to discuss the details and I'll do a custom order for you.

You'll find other word tiles in this range including Dharma, Namaste, Bali, and Peace - http://www.etsy.com/shop/Indounik/search?search_query=bali+word+tiles&search_submit=&search_type=user_shop_ttt_id_6011725&shopname=Indounik

Extra info: The wood used to create this product is from the shell of the coconut. The trees take about 25 to 30 years to mature and produce viable wood but the fruit of the tree - the humble coconut - takes only six months so this is a sustainable product. While I'm told the paint is oil-based, I have not been able to determine if there is any lead content. Either way, these tiles are not suitable for small children.

In my fotos, the Om tiles are sitting in one of the little woven palm leaf trays called canang that are set down several times a day on thresholds and alters all across the island of Bali.

Under a cloud of incense and a sprinkle of holy water, the essence of each offering is wafted skywards to the gods by graceful fingers clasping a frangipani blossom.

This styling of the fotos is in no way intended to be disrespectful to the Balinese or their religious beliefs but rather as a way of drawing attention to their unique culture. As they themselves say, it is the essence of the offering that's important, not what remains.

After the ceremony, cats, dogs or birds often descend to devour the few grains of rice that form part of the offering and the little canang are eventually cleared away for the cycle of devotion to be repeated again later in the day.

The Balinese religion is more concerned with art and ritual than scripture and law, which may explain why so many palm leaves are transformed into these gorgeous little works of art for the gods.

"Let Om be the bow, mind the arrow, and Higher Consciousness the target.
Those who want enlightenment should reflect on the sound and the meaning of Om.
When the arrow is released from the bow it goes straight to the target." ~ Dhyana Bindu Upanishad
