This is the third in line of my "memento mori" rosaries (see history below.) I used a carved howlite skull bead (permanently dyed turquoise) for the Pater and ten 8mm magnesite beads for the Aves, which I've individually wire-wrapped with 22 gauge Zebra silver-colored copper wire to permanently link each bead to the next. I used wrap-linked decorative tube spacers (of lead-free Tibetan silver) for maximum strength and duability to last for a lifetime of normal use. The rosary center is a cut-out image of Christ bearing the cross and the 40x24mm Italian crucifix is stamped with the name "Jerusalem" on the back. This would be an exquisite gift of faith for any occasion! I'll include a prayer card and a keepsake organza pouch with your purchase.

A Brief History of Skull Beads in Rosaries:
The use of skull beads (in almost every religion) in rosaries, chaplets and prayer beads dates back to antiquity. The custom was especially popular from the 1400's through the mid-1800's in Italy, Germany, Spain and Mexico. Skull beads have been carved from wood, bone, ivory, stone and, most desireable of all, from quartz crystal. The skulls signify the Latin term "memento mori", or "remember your mortality." It literally means (in the future)"remember to die." They're there to keep us mindful of how fleeting is our time here on earth and act as an invitation to focus one's thoughts on the prospect of the afterlife.
