I etched a classical female portrait into sterling silver and set it off with a frame made from sterling silver wire. I paired this with a freeform ametrine cabochon that I cut and polished myself from Brazilian rough stone. This gem is a natural quartz that shows clear zones of transition from amethyst to citrine. Natural citrine is somewhat rare and most is produced by heat-treating amethyst. Ametrine probably forms from uneven heating during crystallization. Please note there are a number of internal fractures in the gem and some small inclusions.

The ametrine is 14 x 24 mm. The portrait is 26 x 28 mm while the frame is 51 mm across (about 2 inches). The pendant hangs 68 mm from the sterling silver bail making this a substantial piece. None the less, the wire frame construction means this is a very light weight pendant for its size.
