A nice old wood carving depicting the Lion Monument or the Lion of Lucerne. The original is located in Lucerne, Switzerland and was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen. It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were killed in 1792 during the French Revolution. This sculpture is hand carved from a single piece of wood and is well done with nice attention to detail. The front is marked "Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti" which translates to "To the Loyalty and Bravery of the Swiss". Overall dimensions are 7 1/2" x 2 1/4" x 2 7/8" high. The Lion Carving is in very good overall condition. It would make a fine addition to a sculpture collection.
