Materials

glass, paint, wood, metal, paper, foam board

Wonderful mourning reverse painting on glass featuring a cemetery cross and funeral wreath of golden flowers.

The painting is done in a somewhat primitive style without strict regard to perspective. The colors, which were difficult to capture in the photographs, are predominantly soft blues and greens with dark green on the leaves and gold paint on the flowers and some of the outlines (photos 1 and 3 offer the most accurate depiction of the colors). The painting was professionally framed in a gold frame with muted green accents. We examined the back of the painting by cutting away the paper dust cover along three sides, and what we found is pictured in the last photo, which we've numbered: (1) the first layer under the paper is foam core board tacked to the sides of the frame; (2) next is the back of the glass itself, which has a final layer of white paint and is anchored to the frame with four strips of foam core board, which we did not remove; (3) is a close-up of the paint on the back of the glass; and (4) shows the dust cover with three open sides. As can be seen in the last photo (bottom left) and the three preceding photos, there is some breakdown of the paint, particularly in the area of the flowers where gold paint was used. However, this isn't immediately detected or unsightly, as it blends in with the images. The style of the painting is in keeping with mourning art of the Victorian era; however, it's difficult to accurately date the piece. Suffice it to say that it's an antique, possibly framed or reframed in the mid 1900s. Unique and evocative piece, ready to hang.

MEASUREMENTS:
Overall: 15 11/16 x 13 7/8 in.
Image:13 5/8 x 11 7/8 in.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition. As mentioned, there is some breakdown of the paint, which doesn't really detract. The glass itself is intact and the frame is in very good condition with minor nicks and scuffs.

A NOTE ABOUT VINTAGE: Everything we sell at AlegriaCollection is vintage, meaning that it's at least 20 years old, often much older. Consequently, most of our items show evidence of previous use and, in general, this is viewed as adding to the aged character of a piece. We make every effort to accurately describe any flaws and encourage you to carefully read the description, particularly when purchasing vintage as a gift.
