This illustration is part of my portrait series referring to Japanese culture and imagination. These are digital paint using digital screen technology that allows you to draw in real time and have an approach close to traditional painting. They are then printed on special paper with high-hold inks and providing a precise rendering of the "digital brushstrokes". This is what seduced me in this process, using a digital technique to obtain a traditional spirit.
The inspiration for this drawing is Katsushika Hokusai's "La Manga," which describes life in the capitals of 18th century Japan. I was interested in details of his drawings or paintings to create this portrait of a pipe-smoking samurai. I also like the shades of gold, wood and contrast with the blue on his face, the idea being to have a mixture of poetry and realism.
