OLD WELL HAT
I made this hat by needle felting my special hand-dyed, vegan-friendly fiber, and creating a miniature well, bucket, and water out of various materials.

Here it is in front of the American Gothic House. I went there to see the initial inspiration of fellow Iowan artist, Grant Wood, for his iconic painting. I seem to be following his trajectory. He left Iowa to study art, only to return years later to make work about the place he knew so well.

This piece is part of an on-going series of sculptural yet wearable needle felted hats that appear as abstract forms, figurative creatures, and miniature landscapes. My goal is to transform hats from accessories into art pieces and revive the everyday wear of fabulous hats.

The needle felting process is repetitive and time consuming (but great fun!). The felter stabs loose fiber repeatedly with a barbed needle until it eventually mattes together into solid felt. The piece is slowly built up into a sculptural form and then patterns, colors, and other details are felted on in the same manner.

Please feel free to message me if you have any questions or would like to commission me to make any other type of hat!
