Charles Dickens [1860-1861] the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era, and he remains popular, responsible for some of English literature's most iconic characters. His work has been praised for its realism, mastery of prose, and unique personalities.

Many of his novels, with their recurrent concern for social reform, first appeared in magazines in serialized form, a popular format at the time. Dickens often created the episodes as they were being serialized. Which lent his stories a particular rhythm, punctuated by cliffhangers to keep the public looking forward to the next installment. The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print.

Great Expectations was first printed as a novel in 1861 and proved a resounding success for Dickens. Great Expectations is written in the first person from the point of view of the orphan Pip. The novel, draws Dickens' own experiences of life and people.

Pip is the main character, a boy around 13 years old, easy to fright, and goes through his life suffering lots of sadness. He is in love with a girl named Estella and wants her to find his love. Pip learns the meaning of friendship and the meaning of love and he becomes a better person for it.
