Rebajes was born in 1907 in the Dominican Republic. He lost his job at an Automat during the Depression, but in 1932 he became one of the first modernist jewelry artisans to open a shop in New York City. By 1942 he had a Fifth Avenue retail store and over 100 employees at his factory. Eventually his work was sold in over 500 stores across the country. In 1958 he sold his factory and designs to his foreman Otto Bade. He moved to Spain w he returned to hand wrought, one-of-a-kind pieces. He died in 1990.
