Rip Van Winkle, as acted by Joseph Jefferson III, is his 1865 adaptation of the classic American tale. His play dramatizes Washington Irving's beloved story for the theatre, and from its beginning it dominated America's theater ... and Jefferson's career.

Joe Jefferson (1829-1905), the third of that name to perform on the boards, had enjoyed success playing other characters, but with an immediate run of 170 performances, this play became his stock in trade for the next 40 years - sometimes to his chagrin.

In 1881 he said he had acted the part about 2500 times. Later he commented on his future:
For myself when I knock at the gate with some fear,
I know that St. Peter will say
Walk in, young comedian, and act with us here,
But for Heaven's sake get a new play!

Note: The well known playwright Dion Boucicault, a contemporary of Joe Jefferson, assisted in adapting the fable for the stage.
