Vintage from the 1930s

This is a Royal Standard Portable, also known as the Royal Model O, portable typewriter in gloss black. This machine was made in 1939 and is a quintessential prewar portable. This example is in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition and is a beautiful antique typewriter.

As with all my working typewriters, I have cleaned, lubricated, and adjusted this machine, and is ready to use as soon as you get it home.

**COSMETIC CONDITION**
This Royal portable is a truly beautiful machine. It's gloss black paint with nickel-rimmed, glass-topped keys and chrome elements make it a standout wherever it is. The Royal portables from this time are some of the most striking portable machines of the prewar era, with art-deco lines and classic paint schemes. It also has black crinkle-paint bands that ring the base and ribbon cover. One of the keys ('g') has been replaced by a blank, nondescript replacement, but it's a minor flaw overall.

There are some minor cosmetic imperfections, such as some decal fading and paint scratched or blemishes, but they do nothing to mar the overall beauty of this machine. This is a classic typewriter with an art-deco sensibility and is a beautiful example of pre-war craftsmanship.

This Royal Portable Standard comes with a carrying case that is in good working condition.

**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
This Royal O antique typewriter functions very well and is in excellent (9/10) mechanical condition. Though it was in need of some minor repairs when I found it, the machine is back in working order now. As with most machines of this age, the platen has hardened, and the type slugs can leave indentations or cutouts in the paper. This effect can be lessened with a cushioning sheet of paper or two. The type is clean and clear, and the machine provides an enjoyable typing experience.

**RECOMMENDED BUYER**
I'd recommend this Royal typewriter for a designer who needs a beautiful art nouveau or art deco typewriter for design or aesthetic purposes, a writer who wants to use an antique machine for regular writing duties, or a collector who wants a machine that is as beautiful to look at as it is emblematic of its time. This Royal Model O is a gorgeous machine, and I'm sure it will be a treasured addition to whoever is lucky enough to have it. While this antique typewriter is capable of producing a lot of work, I wouldn't recommend it for daily or heavy writing duties as these older machines are more likely to cause finger strain with their heavier parts.

**INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING**
I will ship internationally, so please contact me for a quote if you are interested in delivery outside of the continental United States.

**MORE TYPEWRITERS / CUSTOM ORDERS**
I have a lot of typewriters, most of which I'm still in the process of refurbishing. If you want a specific machine, or don't see what you like here or in my shop, just let me know.

Returns and exchange details

I sell vintage and antique typewriters that are no longer made, some of which are 100 years old or more. As much as I'd love to be able to tell you that they will always be problem-free and last forever, I can't, because they won't.

Older machines can develop problems without notice, even if they're properly maintained and loved. I promise to accurately describe, photograph, or video any typewriter I sell. If you want additional photos or have questions about anything, all you have to do is ask. You can also inspect the machines in person if you are in the Kansas City area.

So, to make a long story short, I will accept most returns, but I do ask that you pay for return shipping. If your typewriter does not work as it should upon arrival, I'll accept a return unless it was sold as a display model. Also, if you do experience a problem, many times there is a simple repair that will solve it. I can often walk you through the repair so you don't have to send the typewriter back.

Shipping policies

Unless otherwise agreed to or specified, I'll ship all typewriters via USPS, FedEx, or UPS at my discretion. I will use the method that is most economical for my buyers, and will ship to anywhere in the continental United States.

If you are located outside of the United States, please contact me before making a purchase. I can usually arrange shipping, but I don't want to make any promises I cannot keep.

As far as packaging goes, shipping typewriters is notoriously problematic for some people. Typewriters have heavy moving parts (the carriages) that can be easily damaged if not properly secured. I lock the carriages on all shipped typewriters if they have that feature, but I may also secure them with additional safety measures. I use a variety of techniques to make sure your machine gets to you in exactly the same condition it was in when I boxed it up.

Please be advised that some typewriters are very heavy, and can weigh 40 pounds or more. These heavier machines naturally have higher shipping costs associated with them.

Etsy keeps your payment information secure. Etsy shops never receive your credit card information.
I accept credit cards, PayPal, or Etsy gift cards. If you absolutely must have a machine and cannot pay me with either of these methods, please contact me so we can try to work out a solution. I know how strong the pull of a vintage manual typewriter can be, and I'll do my best to make sure I get your baby to you.

A lot of vintage stuff, especially typewriters, is beautiful and awesome. But I suppose you already knew that.
