Wine presses have been used for centuries—the earliest one discovered, dates back 6,000 years. This was likely salvaged from a basket or horizontal screw press, used in a French Vineyard. It was bought in the Charente Maritime, close to the Cognac vineyards. It has been converted into a pedestal/lecturn with a later galleried top. This antique press screw has a deep, rich staining and patina.
It would have been taken from a large wine press where it would have been the centre of a large handle, occupied by people walking either side to bring down the press on a vat of grapes. Sometime in the 20th century it was re-purposed as a pedestal. The screw is late 19th century.
A great and very original piece to display art or to decorate a wine cellar! A very solid piece, heavy and in very good antique condition. Some wear and cracks on wood commensurate with age.

It measures 38.5" height x 13.25" x 13.25" square top or 98cm height x 33.5cm x 33.5cm square top
Screw diameter 6.25" or 16cm
Screw length 24.5" or 62cm
18.1 kg
