Item details

Vintage from the 18th century

Japanese screen, six-panel painting or byobu featuring a stream of joyful children arrayed before their teachers, late Edo period. The signature is of Nagasaki Rosetsu (1754-1799), one of the famed "eccentric" painters of the Edo period (the other two being Soga Shohaku and Ito Jakuchu). Here, the children's effervescence makes them seem to tower over their teachers, who are clearly unable to contain them. Vivid color and fantastic detail in every face and costume. The artwork is in very good condition overall, although the hinges and brocade need restoration. Dimensions: 79" x 144"
