Crested China.

When the railways were built in Great Britain in the 19thcentury, travelling became a lot easier. Ordinary working class people began to travel further afield for recreation, and brought gifts back for friends and relatives, and small mementos to remind themselves of where they had been.

In 1858 William Henry Goss, owner of the Falcon Pottery in Stoke-on –Trent, and his son, saw the potential in this and came up with the idea of making souvenir ware bearing crests and names of towns. The Goss crested china became so popular that many other potteries began making their own crested souvenir ware.

Although today there are many collected crested china companies, Goss has remained the most sought after and is usually of a finer quality than the others. All Goss pieces are marked with the Goshawk and WH Goss. Other collected companies include Arcadian, Carlton, Grafton, Shelley, Willow and many others.

If you are thinking of starting a collection, but not sure what to collect, crested china is the perfect choice. There is still plenty available, over 10,000 different models were made, and each of them can be found with one of several crests. The pieces are usually quite small so an impressive display can be achieved in a small space. The prices are the best thing of all they range from a couple of dollars for the regular pieces, to several hundred for the rarer ones.
