For ancient Egyptians, burning incense was a daily requirement and celebration, and their favorite incense of all was Kyphi. On a daily basis, the ritualized burning of incense in ancient Egypt consisted of frankincense in the morning, myrrh during the day, and Kapet (Kyphi from the Greek translation) in the evening. According to Egyptologists, Kyphi played an important role as a sacred fragrance in many ceremonies and was also used as medicine and healing.

Various Kyphi recipes were made, some using about a dozen ingredients while others included over fifty. Kyphi recipes are inscribed on the walls of the ancient temples of Edfu and Philae, with pictographs of Kyphi being used and recipes for making it. My Kyphi comes from the Temple of Horus at Edfu and is called "traditional" because I have used the exact ingredients listed except the unknown translations. I have substituted herbs that Egyptologists believe to be the plants used in Ancient Egypt. This recipe cis found on the walls of the Laboratory Room located in the Temple's Great Hall. This is the real incense, as close to the ancient Kyphi as we can get. Plus it just smells really great!

The scent of this kyphi is sweet, sensual, smokey, spicy, and truly exotic. It can be used to honor Horus or any other Egyptian Deity or as a general offering to the Gods. It works well for healing, purification, divination, and consecration rites as well. The kyphi is designed to be burned slowly for the best results. You want to avoid directly burning the pellet on a charcoal because it will scorch and has a tendency to smell burnt. This is best accomplished by folding up a piece of aluminum foil several times into a thick little bowl that can be placed onto the charcoal. This calms the heat a bit and won't burn the incense. Burning myrrh is best done this way too. If you have an electric incense heater use a low setting for best results.

You will receive over an ounce of incense (30 grams) in a labeled glass jar with cork. The presentation is almost as beautiful as the incense.

This wonderful aromatic incense should be burned in an appropriate incense vessel. Its magickal aroma will intoxicate and fill the air, inside or out of doors, with a lovely natural fragrance.

Phytognosis specializes in rare and unique plant resins, woods, oils, and leaves for use during ritual.
