Item details

Vintage from the 1970s

Materials

metal, plastic, chrome, rubber

This is a vintage Olympia SM7 manual typewriter in cream and gray. The Olympia SM line produced some of the finest manual typewriters ever made, with the SM7 coming out in the early 1960s. It was larger than previous Olympia portables and proved to be one of the most reliable, well-made typewriters ever made.

As with my other machines. I've lubricated, and adjusted this typewriter, and it is in ready-to-type condition.

**COSMETIC CONDITION**
Cosmetically, this SM7 typewriter is in excellent condition. The machine has a two-tone shell, with a cream top and carriage covers and a textured gray bottom. The keys are cream-colored, with two seafoam-green shift keys and matching green platen knobs. There are also polished metal accent and control pieces, as well as Olympia name badges.

There are some minor wear marks and blemishes with this machine here and there, but nothing large or significant.

This SM7 comes in carrying case that is in very good condition.

**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
Mechanically, this working typewriter is in excellent condition. The machine types with a confident, easy action, and is capable of a lot of writing if called upon. It has an 11 character-per-inch type, which types easily. The platen has hardened some and will leave occasional indents, but it otherwise fine.

The only mechanical issue is that the shift-lock key isn't always reliable. I've tried to adjust it, but I think the metal has worn to the point where it won't always hold. This isn't a major, as you can hold the shift key down manually.

**RECOMMENDED BUYER**
The Olympia SM7 is, first and foremost, a serious writing tool. It's a writer's typewriter through and through. Whenever someone asks me to recommend a typewriter for regular or heavy use, the SM series from Olympia is always my first recommendation. Though I personally feel the later SM9 is superior, the SM7 is a fantastic writer as well.

For people who want a reliable typewriter capable of heavy writing, there are few competitors to the SM7. Like other Olympias, these are finely crafted writing instruments and will serve as a working typewriter as long as you care for them.

**INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING**
I do ship internationally, so please contact me if you live outside the United States and would like a shipping estimate.

Thank you, and feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

Returns and exchange details

I sell vintage and antique typewriters that are no longer made, some of which are 100 years old or more. As much as I'd love to be able to tell you that they will always be problem-free and last forever, I can't, because they won't.

Older machines can develop problems without notice, even if they're properly maintained and loved. I promise to accurately describe, photograph, or video any typewriter I sell. If you want additional photos or have questions about anything, all you have to do is ask. You can also inspect the machines in person if you are in the Kansas City area.

So, to make a long story short, I will accept most returns, but I do ask that you pay for return shipping. If your typewriter does not work as it should upon arrival, I'll accept a return unless it was sold as a display model. Also, if you do experience a problem, many times there is a simple repair that will solve it. I can often walk you through the repair so you don't have to send the typewriter back.

Shipping policies

Unless otherwise agreed to or specified, I'll ship all typewriters via USPS, FedEx, or UPS at my discretion. I will use the method that is most economical for my buyers, and will ship to anywhere in the continental United States.

If you are located outside of the United States, please contact me before making a purchase. I can usually arrange shipping, but I don't want to make any promises I cannot keep.

As far as packaging goes, shipping typewriters is notoriously problematic for some people. Typewriters have heavy moving parts (the carriages) that can be easily damaged if not properly secured. I lock the carriages on all shipped typewriters if they have that feature, but I may also secure them with additional safety measures. I use a variety of techniques to make sure your machine gets to you in exactly the same condition it was in when I boxed it up.

Please be advised that some typewriters are very heavy, and can weigh 40 pounds or more. These heavier machines naturally have higher shipping costs associated with them.

Etsy keeps your payment information secure. Etsy shops never receive your credit card information.
I accept credit cards, PayPal, or Etsy gift cards. If you absolutely must have a machine and cannot pay me with either of these methods, please contact me so we can try to work out a solution. I know how strong the pull of a vintage manual typewriter can be, and I'll do my best to make sure I get your baby to you.

Additional policies

A lot of vintage stuff, especially typewriters, is beautiful and awesome. But I suppose you already knew that.
