Great Blue Heron Pin with amethyst - sterling silver - metal brooch

Heron is 3 inches long from stone to toe.
The amethyst is 6mm.

Years ago I lived in a little cabin in a fir forest on the edge of the Salish Sea. If I remember clearly, there were only 10 to 20 steps to the water’s edge from the front door, depending on the tide. Directly in front of the cabin was a stone jetty that jutted out from a gravel beach. This was a regular fishing spot for a great blue heron. As I imagine that her ancestors have done for millenia, she would wade in the water to catch fish at low tide. At high tide she’d stand camouflaged on the massive stones of the jetty. When startled into flight she would present her Pleistocene profile against the fir trees and sky. In the darkness of night she would become the night watchman. At the presence of an intruder, she would startle all sleepy creatures for a mile around with her sudden, harsh voice. She would tear open the dark cloak of silence as she flew indignantly to the safety of a tree on a nearby island.

One full-moon night in midsummer, Heron was doing a little fishing. She looked down, saw the reflection of the moon and snatched it up just for you.
