:: Care & Handling ::

As with any china with metallic embellishment, these should not be used in microwaves, and we strongly recommend hand washing. Where there is surface crazing, avoid staining by restricting contact with acidic or deeply colored liquids & foods (strong coffee, beets, etc). Finally, while it is tempting to stack the pieces, doing so will wear the glaze off the handles.

PLEASE NOTE: Vintage and antique dinnerware pieces were often decorated with glazes containing varying amounts of lead, a toxic chemical. If you have a concern, please research before purchasing. To minimize exposure to lead when using vintage dinnerware, please observe the following precautions: use infrequently; do not expose to high heat, including microwaves, ovens, and dishwashers; avoid contact with acidic foods & liquids, especially if cracked or crazed (slight crackling of the clear overglaze); do not use to store food or liquids; hand wash with a gentle detergent soon after use and allow to air dry.

:: Salem Streamline • Salem Tricorne ::

In the 1930s, the Salem (Ohio) China Company produced a series of futuristic, atomic dinnerware shapes (designed by Don Schreckengost, Herbert Smith & Vincent Broomhall) known as 'Tricorne' and 'Streamline'. Don's famed industrial designer brother Viktor also supposedly had a hand in their design.

Atomic, architectural, purely futuristic, Streamline & Tricorne smashed into the well-ordered design world of line and curve with Jetson-like conical shapes, sharply angular handles, and curvy triangular plates.

The variety of designs and colors were myriad: white contrasting with solid bands of color like the popular Mandarin orange, and more rare Banana yellow, Kelly green, & Egyptian blue; Streamlined rings of platinum, orange, aqua, creamsicle, or gold; Decal images like sailing ships, polo players atop their ponies, petit point figures, Flamenco dancers, florals; and custom designs like card suit symbols or jolly fat baker men!

It’s our intention to provide the most comprehensive collection of this unique 1930s dinnerware available online, so for more fantastic Streamline and Tricorne dishes, see our Atomic Salem Dinnerware section:
