This is a very rare edition of Jules Verne's The Castle of the Carpathians.
New York: The Merriam Co., 1894. First American Edition (undated, but published in 1894), 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. Bound in decorated maroon cloth decorated in black and white, 211 pages. Plus 1 page ad in rear, frontispiece, 38 illustrations, shelf-worn, top and bottom of spine have some loss, binding somewhat shaken and two inside illustration pages detached. Previous owners name in pencil on front endpaper. See photos for details.

This mysterious tale takes place in the area which in just a few years would become known as Dracula's homeland. The descriptions of the quaint villagers of Werst, their costumes, manner of living, and belief in the supernatural world would in themselves prove an interesting narrative, but when coupled with the exciting adventures of Nic Deck, the two Counts, the cowardly Doctor, and the beautiful La Stilla, the story is undoubtedly one of the most enchanting ever offered.
