So there I was, poolside at the resort, positively slathered in sunscreen, crouched beneath a huge hat, with my book and my obligatory umbrella-festooned fancy cocktail and it was hot. Really hot. Wavy-heat-fumes-on-the-horizon hot. Even the cicadas were complaining, repeating an unending chorus of undulating chirps from beneath the bushes. Truth be told, I was pretty bored too, so it’s not surprising that I dozed off. I was dreaming, no doubt, of my messy, cluttered, COOL studio, a nice cup of tea and a cookie, because when I awoke, I was drooling ever-so-daintily, my cocktail had melted entirely and the sun had drifted behind me. Having decided that all this lying about was not in my nature, I gathered my sunburnt self off the chaise and set out to explore the botanical gardens.
What a wonder they were! Cloaked in shade so green and deep they may as well have been under the sea, delicate ferns unfurled their fronds along the path, winding around clumps of fragrant cyclamen and congregations of hosta. Opalescent motes descended in the filtered sunlight, sparkly as fairies and swirled around the dancing dresses of a cotillion of trumpet flowers. Now this was more like it! Beside a softly trickling fountain, a small rustle of motion caught my eye. Dropping to my knees the in soft moss, I came face to face with the fetching little sprite you see here. She sat on a fancy velvet Persian cushion the size of a Chiclet atop a rather large mushroom and was fanning herself lazily with a small cyclamen leaf she had fashioned into a fan. If she’d had clothes at any point, she had shucked them, because she was completely nude but for her tiny top hat. I had to admit she had the right idea on a day as hot as this one. Clutching a parasol that looked vaguely familiar, she rustled her wings a few times and explained that her name was Morelle Champignon, a mushroom sprite, and if she could be so bold as to ask, she’d love a nice Elderflower Spritzer or perhaps some Basil Sorbet, please. Well, clearly I had had too much sun, so I made my way out of the fabulous gardens and back to my sweltering chaise to gather my things and go lie down in a dark room. Which would have been all well and good if the little umbrella hadn’t been missing from my drink and the glass circled by a ring of tiny glittering footprints. Instead, I beseeched the kitchen for some sorbet (sadly, no basil – only blackberry), packed it into a toothpaste cap and garnished a thimbleful of club soda with the tiniest shamrock I could find. Racing back to the garden, I stopped by the bar to swipe a few more tiny paper umbrellas for good measure. Of course the sprite was gone when I got there, but I stashed the goodies by her mushroom anyway. I hope she found them.
