Hold on now...

Our original sputter-looper-glitch-box returns in a third incarnation. Like its predecessor, the Formula 2, the Bad Day Box 3rd Edition features a dandy rocker switch and four 1/4" jacks (source input/output & feedback loop send/return); it's housed in our preferred go-to tidy black box (the same size used on the DCG, et al). The only palpable difference this version and the previous models is the added extra knob. Okay, so?

Here's what's up.

Bad Day Box 3rd Edition is designed to switch between a direct line level source and a feedback loop generated by an FX unit. With a flick of the switch the BDB3 takes the source signal and blends it with the FX unit's feedback loop. Turning the potentiometer (knob) increases or decreases the level of the feedback loop... this allows one to have more control in actually shaping the tone, frequency, and sometimes even the pitch generated by the feedback. Have a look here:

In the video, the BDB3 alternates between a sampler*/distortion combo and a feedback loop created using EQ and (more) distortion. The 3rd Edition can also accept other high-gain sources such as keyboards, synthesizers, all those favorite guitar pedals -- you name it. Feedback looping/FX units can really be anything too. We find that keeping things simple can yield better results, but then again, sort of like house cats, we also get distracted and love to see what other goobers can jam. The best feedback loops shape the sound. Envelope filters, Moog pedals, EQ's, synthesizers; other devices featuring tone, speed, and pitch controls work, too. These will turn the Bad Day Box into a good day making noise!

Lastly, it should be pointed out that the Bad Day Box 3rd Edition is a passive device. This means that there are no circuits inside and that it doesn't require external power. Such being the case, there may be a smidge of signal bleed when using loud FX. While we personally enjoy a little extra ghost hiss (this too, can sometimes deliver unexpectedly delightful outcomes), it might not be every person's cup of fermented beverage.

PS... the sampler* in the video is our very own Temporal Knob Twirler!

Just a heads up: the device depicted in the image might vary slightly from the actual product. As a rule I try to keep things consistent, however occasionally I'll have to use different ingredients based on availability from suppliers.

Fear not, the BDB3 comes with instructions and handy diagrams.

It started simply enough- I wanted a mic for my noise project. Then 2. Then a Temporal. $120 and two bundles later and I couldn’t be happier. I’m the getting results out of Crank’s creations that I’ve dreamed about for years. Plus, his customer service is second to none. I bugged him with inane questions for weeks and he answered everything quick and positively to ensure I was getting exactly what I needed. He’s made a customer for life out of me. Thanks Crank, I appreciate all the help!

Just what I have been looking for to replace umpteen splitter cables! Despite the package going by boat from California to Tokyo, by plane to Helsinki, then the usual to my local post office, it was worth the wait! (And it slid under customs radar - always a bonus!) Packed well, with clear instructions and proper warnings - just the perfect tool for sonic mayhem!

Sounds awesome! Excellently made! Also, Crank was able to custom make it with 6' of cabling instead of 4' with no hassles. Highly recommended if you're looking for some well made contact mics for field recording enthusiasts, noise makers,.!
