When designing this pattern for a unisex LAB COAT we researched real-life STEM wear and found that modern lab coats feature all kinds of stylish new features — like the inverse pleat we used to fit the back, and the angled lower pockets that we spotted in a fashionable medical layout. We also included just-like-the-real-thing details like faced lapels, a button (or snap) front closure and a neatly stitched fabric tab in back to control the extra fullness — because real-world scientists can't have loose, flapping belts in labs full of glassware!

Then we added a couture feature that you're unlikely to see on any other mass-market pattern — a curved back yoke seam that invisibly builds in shape, allowing the coat to fit smoothly over rounded doll shoulders.

That's the kind of tailoring detail you might find in a real coat pattern, so we also included directions to transform the lab coat into a cinched-waist UNLINED COAT or raincoat, using your choice of fashion fabric and contrasting lapels. With the same comfortable, slightly wide-set shoulders and relaxed sleeve opening as the lab versions, these pretty coats are great for layering.

And finally, because we don't want anyone actually blinded with science, we've included patterns and directions to make doll-scale clear vinyl SAFETY GOGGLES — the perfect science lab accessory craft.

This package includes patterns and directions specifically for 14 1/2" WellieWishers® and similar hard-bodied play dolls, such as Play Zone Style Girl dolls and Battat® Glitter Girl dolls.

We value our reputation for perfect fit, so we didn't just re-scale this pattern from our 18 inch doll size. Rather, we drafted this size separately to suit these adorable dolls and their unique proportions. For instance, though we added maximum roundness to the curved yoke seams for the well-padded American Girl shoulders, this pattern features more gentle curves for the slender, plastic 14 1/2" doll bodies.

The Unisex Lab Coat (or Unlined Coat) is rated EASY / INTERMEDIATE for topstitching on small pieces, turned facings and curved set-in sleeve seams.

The Safety Goggles are rated INTERMEDIATE for work with vinyl and vinyl glue, which should only be used by adults in a well-ventilated area, or while wearing a properly-rated respirator.

MATERIALS — SAFETY GOGGLES

Heavyweight, flexible clear vinyl (we recommend .06" thick 60 gauge vinyl)

1/8" elastic

1/8" wide clear double-sided (double-sticky) craft tape (look for permanent tape in the scrapbooking aisle at the craft store)

Water-soluble fine point marker (for temporarily marking vinyl)

1/8" hole punch (a useful tool — we use ours all the time to mark paper patterns as well)

OPTIONAL cardstock for printing the pattern page

OPTIONAL vinyl glue (such as Loctite) ***Always use these glues in a well-ventilated area and/or while wearing a properly-rated respirator***

OPTIONAL fine tip applicator for glue

OPTIONAL 2 beads with a bore wide enough to pass your elastic through twice

These patterns were developed to fit 14 1/2" WellieWishers® and similar dolls with average chest measurements of 7", average waist measurements of 6" and average hip measurements of 7 3/4". They will fit differently on different dolls.
