This is a 1950 First Edition Second Printing of the Popular Edition of AUDUBON'S BIRDS OF AMERICA by the MACMILLAN Company New York ....It has 288 of John James Audubons colored bird plates...along with a 15 page introduction by Ludlow Griscom with information about the infamous Audubon and his life.

John James Audubon (1785-1851) fame and renown have increased with the passage of time. He has been a perpetual source of study, discussion and debate and his life is a very interesting study. He was born the son of a French naval officer and a creole woman of Santo Domingo and had a spoiled boyhood on an estate in France, early developing both a talent for drawing , and a love of the outdoors, natural history and birds in particular, which he could not control, and which motivated his entire life. When he was 17 years of age, he was sent to North America to take charge of a property near Philadelphia, and thenceforth adopted his new country wholeheartedly. He had a dream of publishing a series of paintings of every North American bird and was determined to see it through no matter the cost.

This book is in good vintage condition for it's age, although, the bottom right corner edge has wear and also slight wear around the edging, the pages and color plates are all in very good condition with some yellowing on the pages due to the vintage age which to me adds the charm of this book...would be a wonderful book for framing the plates or using in altered art projects...also for just collecting the Audubon prints. The spine is green and black with gold print and the cover has a wonderful feather pattern. Book is overall in good condition and would make a great gift for the collector or ornithology lover in your life.
