Materials

paper, gold foil, felt paper stock, cardboard, vellum

This rare book was privately printed in 1925 in very limited numbers. It features black and white photogravure reproductions of 18th and 19th century paintings by British artists, held in the private collection of American railroad magnate Henry Edwards Huntington at San Marino, California (now known as The Huntington library). The hard-bound book has a long title: "A Catalogue of Some of the Paintings of the British School in the Collection of Henry Edwards Huntington at San Marino, California" and measures 9.5" (24cm) X 11.75" (30cm) with approx. 160 pages. There are 34 photogravure reproductions of paintings, each on a separate page with protective vellum cover on each and a detailed description on the opposite page. Included in the catalog is the famous "Blue Boy" painting by Thomas Gainsbourough along with a fold-out copy of a letter from Sir Charles J. Holmes, Director of the National Gallery, London bidding farewell to the painting after it left London in 1922. This is a finely crafted book with thick felt paper stock, rough cut bottom and side edges, gold guild top page edges, blind embossed frames around each painting and gold foil stamped cover.
