Necklace length: 22 Inches; Pendant height: 3 Inches; Pendant width: 1 1/2 Inches

A beautiful pair of lorgnette glasses, offered here as a statement pendant on a long, flat link chain. A lorgnette is a pair of spectacles - usually retractable - that are held by a handle up to the eyes, rather than with ear wires. They were worn on long "lorgnette chains" and most popular around the turn of the century. The name comes from the French verb "lorgner," which means "to squint." Hopefully, less squinting at the opera/ballet would be required with a pair of these!

This piece is silver plated and studded with marcasites. The handle has a split leaf design, engraved on one side and studded with marcasites on the other. A little tug on the thumb lever near the top of the handle opens the spectacles. A wonderful statement and conversation piece! I put it on a long (22") flat curb link chain: I like the antiqued metal finish and I also like how this piece looks worn a little bit longer. Perfect as the bottom rung of your necklace stack/ladder!

Measurements: 3" by 1 1/2", 22" chain
Era: 1900s-1910s
