I was very fortunate to find a Cherokee man who makes wonderful animal totem beads from clay, ochre stain and wood fire. Each is unique and takes it's color streaks from the fire. He inscribes each with Cherokee syllabary to represent different animals. These beads are meant to help tap into the animal's spirit, and each bead is smudged by him when finished. Beads are made by hand one at a time and all vary in size and color variations and are incised with symbol on two sides. This makes them unique to the bag it will be put on.
Bobcats are protectors and secret keepers.
This medicine bag was built around the bead with the bobcat symbol. Bobcats are protectors and secret keepers. To see a photo of the legend I have that shows symbol and pronunciation of bobcat, view the last photo. (I will include a print out of this in your package upon sale.)
Pouch is made of two colors of deer hide buckskin with a natural edge used, braided neck lace and all hand sewn. I hand sew all components of my pieces so they last a lifetime. I have added a bobcat claw on the flap and the pottery bead on the strap along with a piece of bobcat fur sewn on the bottom with nice face markings. Fringe has a few copper and striped trade beads added. The bead has a thin line on it that, at first, may appear to be a crack, it is not. Because these are made in a fire, they sometimes get soot from the firing in crevices these beads sometimes have from the hand making process. This only adds to the primitive antique bead patina look.
Bag body is about 4" deep and 2 1/2" wide. Total length is about 8".
I have beads for wolf, bear, deer and coyote and will be making more in the next few days.
