Vintage from the 1930s

Materials

This is a Royal 10 standard (desktop) typewriter in gloss black. It is in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition.

The Royal 10 standard typewriters are the embodiment of what an antique typewriter should look like. They're big, mechanical, and cooler than just about any machine you're likely to find. There were two main versions of the ten, the two glass pane and the four glass pane. Both allowed you to look inside to see the inner mechanisms. This version is the later 2-pane version, though, like many from this time, one of the glass panes is missing. (They tended to crack or break quite often.)

This machine has been cleaned, lubricated, adjusted, repaired, polished, and returned to working condition. It ships with a newly installed ribbon and will be ready-to-use as soon as you get it home.

**COSMETIC CONDITION**
Cosmetically, this Royal 10 typewriter is in very good (8/10) condition. The gloss black paint is still in terrific shape, wit just the right amount of showroom gleam and age-acquired patina to give it the perfect new/old antique look. The chrome accent and control pieces look good, while the decals show some degree of silvering/fading. As mentioned, one of the two glass panes is missing. This is not an uncommon issue for this typewriter, and it does afford an unobstructed look into the machine's inner workings.

**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
This Royal 10 is in excellent (9/10) working condition. The machine had some mechanical issues when I found it, but I repaired them all and this Royal 10 is once again ready for use. The type is clear and crisp, and the machine types responsively. The platen has hardened some with time and will leave indents or possibly letter cutouts occasionally.

**RECOMMENDED BUYER**
I would recommend this Royal desktop to anyone who wants an iconic, working antique typewriter of distinction and beauty. The Royal 10 is one of the most widely recognized and sought-after typewriters for design or decorative purposes, and it's easy to see why. Display it in your home, at your office, or anywhere you want to appreciate an object of industrial beauty.

Though this machine is a workhorse and was designed to stand up to heavy daily writing, I don't recommend it for that purpose simply because there are newer typewriters that will allow you to type more easily. Antiques like the 10 are heavy and made with heavier parts. This makes them harder on a typist's hands, especially after hours of manually writing each letter. While you can use this Royal 10 as a daily working typewriter, I'd recommend a different machine if you want something for heavy use.

**INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING**
I do sell to customers outside the continental United States, so if you're an international buyer, please contact me so I can get you a personalized shipping quote.

**SHIPPING COSTS**
Please note that these old Royal desktop typewriters are beasts. There's a $50 shipping and handling fee for this machine for domestic customers. This is not only to cover the cost of shipping, but also to cover the cost of packing the typewriter. If you don't package these antique typewriters correctly, they can be easily damaged during shipping simply because they can tear themselves to pieces if not protected perfectly.

Thank you for looking, and feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

Returns and exchange details

I sell vintage and antique typewriters that are no longer made, some of which are 100 years old or more. As much as I'd love to be able to tell you that they will always be problem-free and last forever, I can't, because they won't.

Older machines can develop problems without notice, even if they're properly maintained and loved. I promise to accurately describe, photograph, or video any typewriter I sell. If you want additional photos or have questions about anything, all you have to do is ask. You can also inspect the machines in person if you are in the Kansas City area.

So, to make a long story short, I will accept most returns, but I do ask that you pay for return shipping. If your typewriter does not work as it should upon arrival, I'll accept a return unless it was sold as a display model. Also, if you do experience a problem, many times there is a simple repair that will solve it. I can often walk you through the repair so you don't have to send the typewriter back.

Shipping policies

Unless otherwise agreed to or specified, I'll ship all typewriters via USPS, FedEx, or UPS at my discretion. I will use the method that is most economical for my buyers, and will ship to anywhere in the continental United States.

If you are located outside of the United States, please contact me before making a purchase. I can usually arrange shipping, but I don't want to make any promises I cannot keep.

As far as packaging goes, shipping typewriters is notoriously problematic for some people. Typewriters have heavy moving parts (the carriages) that can be easily damaged if not properly secured. I lock the carriages on all shipped typewriters if they have that feature, but I may also secure them with additional safety measures. I use a variety of techniques to make sure your machine gets to you in exactly the same condition it was in when I boxed it up.

Please be advised that some typewriters are very heavy, and can weigh 40 pounds or more. These heavier machines naturally have higher shipping costs associated with them.

Etsy keeps your payment information secure. Etsy shops never receive your credit card information.
I accept credit cards, PayPal, or Etsy gift cards. If you absolutely must have a machine and cannot pay me with either of these methods, please contact me so we can try to work out a solution. I know how strong the pull of a vintage manual typewriter can be, and I'll do my best to make sure I get your baby to you.

A lot of vintage stuff, especially typewriters, is beautiful and awesome. But I suppose you already knew that.
