The Romance of Lauka`ie`ie, by Caren Loebel-Fried, is an 11x14” limited edition fine art print from the original hand-colored block print. The materials used for this Giclée were all of the highest quality, printed on acid-free, museum quality, 100% cotton paper, using archival, pigment-based inks. Each piece is signed and numbered by the artist, backed by a white acid-free board, and packaged in a clear re-sealable art bag with a description and a certificate of authenticity on the back.

Caren learned the ancient art of block printing from her mother. She volunteers and researches on Midway Atoll, Kīlauea Point, and other wild places around the Hawaiian Islands. Caren creates art for many organizations, supporting the work they do on behalf of wildlife, conservation, and the perpetuation of Hawaiian Culture. Caren’s award winning illustrated books include Manu, the Boy Who Loved Birds, A Perfect Day for an Albatross, Naupaka, Lono and the Magical Land Beneath the Sea, Hawaiian Legends of Dreams, Hawaiian Legends of the Guardian Spirits, Pua Polu, the Pretty Blue Hawaiian Flower, Tree of Souls, and Legend of the Gourd.

"The Romance of Lauka`ie`ie,"
From Hawaiian Legends of Dreams, University of Hawai`i Press

There was once a lonely couple living on a ridge above the Waipi`o valley. They yearned for a child and prayed daily, making offerings to their gods. One night the woman had a powerful dream. The goddess, Hina–ulu–`ohi`a appeared before her and said, “Go down to the mouth of the river. There you will find a baby girl. She must be left in the care of the gods for 30 days. After that, she will be yours to cherish.”

The next morning, the man and woman rushed to the mouth of the river. They found a cloud of red mist and heard a baby’s cry within. An `ohi`a tree rose up from the mist and a flock of scarlet `i`iwi birds flew to the top of the tree to sip sweet nectar from the red lehua blossoms. The couple visited every day but on the 30th day there were no cries within the red cloud. They followed the trail toward their hale, their house, and heard strange voices calling to them. There stood Hina and Ku, the goddess and god, with the baby in Hina’s arms. The goddess said, “The child is now yours to care for.”

The child was called Lauka`ie`ie and she grew up with the spirits of the forest birds, snails, and plants as her companions. After many years, she began to dream every night of a man who lived where the sun sets. The forest creatures were determined to find Lauka`ie`ie’s dream husband and, with the help of Makanikau, the Chief of the Winds, the group wore bodies of wind and flew into the sky in a heaving gust.

Makanikau, the Chief of the Winds, and the other travelers searched every island until, at the northern tip of Kaua`i, they saw a red cloud of a thousand `i`iwi birds which held a young man aloft with the beating of wings. On the tiny islet of Lehua, the sunset island, the birds placed Kawelona on the ground. The Chief of the Winds appeared before him and said, “I was sent by Lauka`ie`ie to find you.” The young man cried, “I dream of her every night. I have been waiting for you!”

For years after, Lauka`ie`ie and Kawelona lived a peaceful and happy life together with the sprits of the forest. When they had grown very old, it was time for Kawelona to join his ancestors and for Lauka`ie`ie to abandon her human form to become the `ie`ie vine. The Chief of the Winds blew her all around the Islands of Hawai`i, to grow in the forests and climb up the tall `ohi`a trees. There she grows today, in the forests of Hawai`i, supported and protected by her guardian Hina–ulu– `ohi`a once again.

Ordered four prints including Midway and Alala Love - I have both of them as jigsaw puzzles and had to get the prints :-) Quick shipping and very well packaged up - Caren included a free extra as thanks which was totally unexpected. Beautiful artwork - now I have to visit another favorite Etsy store to get frames made!
