This is a dramatic 90-carat oval cabochon Mookaite that measures 46 x 37 x 6.8 mm. It is smoothly polished on both sides. Its warm colors and striking patterns, looking almost like brush strokes, make it a striking focal for a pendant, a brooch or even a wide bracelet. A setting of either a bright metal like gold or silver, or a darker one like oxidized copper, would greatly enhance this stone.

The pictures give an idea of how the gemstone looks under various lighting conditions and different backgrounds. The last picture shows the detail on the back of the gem.

Mookaite comes from the Mooka Creek area in Western Australia, it is a a high silica sedimentary rock which may be considered a variety of chert (thus being named Radiolarite or Radiolarian Chert). It forms in the weathering profile of a geological formation known as Windalia Radiolarite The local varicolored opaline to chalcedonic radiolarite that is mined is the gemstone widely called Mookaite jasper.
