Civil War Era Lined Ladies Corset fastened with Grommets in the Back

This is a custom made corset - made to your exact measurements.

This corset is made of two layers of heavy, pre-washed cotton fabric. The seams in the outer layer have been felled for increased strength. Hook and eye tape is used as the front closure. This method of closing the corset is equal in strength to busk, but allows more flexibility and provides a more economical product. Hooks also make it easy to put on. You won't need to unlace it every time you wear it - you can simply use the hooks. It laces up the back using hand-set metal grommets. The two ties meet at the waist. It has 6 flexible metal bones in the front and sides and 4 flat metal bones on either side of the grommets. The boning is sewn into the corset between the layers of fabric. The materials I use provide enough strength to assure the proper shape and support while still allowing some degree of mobility. I have worn my unlined corset while sewing at craft shows and re-enactments for several years and I am very pleased with the way it has held up.

My corsets will come to about the nipple line at the top and just over the top of the hip bones at the bottom. They will lift the bust line up a bit more than a bra will and give plenty of support. They are very typically of the corsets worn in the 1860's.

The standard length corset has an overall length in the center front of approximately 14 inches, 10 inches at the side, and 12 inches in the back. They are now available in longer sizes - either one or two inches longer. To determine the length you need measure from your arm pit straight down to the very top of your hip bone. "Standard" is around 12". "Standard" is also usually good for women up to around 5'5" tall - depending on your build. If you are unsure about what length to order PLEASE contact me so we can discuss it. I will accept returns on the standard length because I can resell them eventually. Because the longer ones are so customized I don't want them back.

To summarize the lengths:
Standard: 14" center front, 10" sides, 12" center back
1 inch longer: 15" center front, 11" sides, 13" center back
2 inches longer: 16" center front, 12" sides, 14" center back

EXTRA BONING

If your bra cup size is larger than a "D", I recommend extra boning. I also recommend extra boning if the waist measurement exceeds 44 inches. If you wish to have extra boning, please purchase them through the listing for extra boning for a working corset.

SHIPMENT

Each corset will be custom made for you. Please allow approximately two weeks from your order date for me to complete your corset. You will receive an email with the delivery confirmation number when the corset is ready to ship. Your corset will be shipped to you using Priority Mail.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

The corsets are machine washable. I recommend line drying.

These corsets are not intended to drastically reduce your waist size. The corset is made to take the strain, but your body is not. For health reasons, I do not recommend taking more than four inches off of your waist size.

I include lacing instructions with each corset. This provides you with details on how to properly put on and wear your new corset. The instructions are printed on a colored slip of paper attached to your packing slip.

My clients and the quality of my products are very important to me. I welcome all correspondence from my customers.

ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS

*Please provide your waist, bust, and hip measurements in inches. You can either do this during the check out process or in a conversation. Either way is fine - just so I have them.

The bust measurement, taken at the fullest part, can be taken while wearing a bra.

The waist measurement should be taken at your natural waist line - about 2" above your belly button.

The hip measurement should be taken at about crotch level.

*Do not send only your bra size, as these measurements can vary with manufacturers and may result in an improper fit.

*Also feel free to include any additional information that you feel may be helpful.

QUESTIONS

Since a corset is something most people are not familiar with purchasing, we encourage correspondence. We will happily answer all your questions and do our best to assure a great fit.

General description of available corsets:
Both the lined and the unlined will fit, feel and look the same. They are also the same quality - the rule of thumb that lined is better doesn't apply here. They are both modeled from the same pattern. The lined one is made from two layers of fabric with the boning sewn in between the layers. The unlined one is made from one layer of fabric with special pockets for the boning. My corset is unlined because I figure that one less layer of fabric has to be cooler - right? Of course, when it’s one hundred degrees I'm not sure it matters! The lined ones are more popular. I don't know if that's because lined is more period correct or if people assume that they are better quality. This is a totally personal choice and there really is no "wrong" way to go with it. They are so close to being the same.

We also have the "Formal" Corset listed. that one is quite different. If you've never worn a corset before, I would order the "Working" style. If comfort is more important than correctness, then the working corset is the way to go. If being period correct is more important than you would want the formal type.

Thanks for looking!
