ALICIA: Acrylic Painting 12" x 12" x 1/8" on birch plywood

As of January 1, 2011, I am introducing the concept of micro-industry and ETSY to my art therapy students to empower them as they sell their own crafts!

"I am proposing to create another kind of business, based on "selflessness" that is in all of us. I am calling it social business." - Muhammed Yunus

This featured artist is "Alicia"!

Alicia stands out amongst all the talented young artists that I have worked with. She has a unique and natural approach to her painting that needs to be left undisturbed, yet Alicia will rise to a challenge to adapt and problem solve in any art medium. Her fragile beauty and strong spirit shine through in her fierce work.

The youth I work with present with a variety of issues including social anxiety, behavioral challenges, learning disabilities, substance abuse and mental health. My mission is to provide the opportunity for a reparative and holding experience in a safe and creative space in which the youth can take advantage of the opportunity to make art, express self, and deal with unresolved conflicts and feelings. Sock monkey making and painting/drawing are integral in my art therapy program. In order to provide a healthy and educational way for the students to carry their craft making into the future and to earn a small income, I am now including youth art in my ETSY shop.

Alicia receives 80% of the sales price. 20% goes towards administration, fees, site management, advertising, packaging costs, materials and sock monkey therapy. The artist also participates in initiatives such as Operation Sock Monkey, a volunteer-run initiative in support of humanitarian organizations such as Clowns Without Borders (CWB) that provide laughter, hope and healing to communities around the world affected by disease, disaster and social/political turmoil.
