“Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

Following Jesus is dangerous. At the end of Luke 9, Jesus addresses a man who haphazardly declares his allegiance to Jesus. Using a title he favored for himself, Jesus says “the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head”. Following Jesus and proclaiming the Kingdom meant stepping away from the familiar and comfortable. It meant leaving behind loved ones. It meant leaving home. In fact, he is telling this man he will have no home.

Jesus challenges us to wrestle with why we do what we do and how we do it. In this passage, he reminds us there is comfort losing and finding our way in that mystery.

This illustration “Nowhere to Rest” is from a series by Stephen Procopio that reflects on things hidden in the actions and statements made by Jesus. His rebukes are often shrouded in parable, his actions full of allusion. The selection of passages in these illustrations display the mystery of Jesus found between and inside that which we see.
