Item details

ballpoint pen refill, Pine twig

These pens are made from the natural fallen branches of white pine trees, collected from around my home in rural Massachusetts. More specifically, these twigs came from branches that broke off of a pine tree while they were still green and carrying needles, and were then exposed to the summer sun for several weeks or months. It's only through this natural process that the bark of pine twigs acquires the beautiful red-brown colors and striated texture you can see in the photographs. Thus the material of these pens is as humble as the natural ground litter of the forest floor, and yet also exotic, formed only under certain special conditions. The polyurethane finish of the pens highlights the texture and colors of the pens while providing a protective coating.

These pens are between 7 and 8 inches (18 - 20 cm) long and about 3/8 inches (1 cm) in diameter. As natural sticks, some are thicker or thinner, and some are straighter or more crooked. Inside each pen is a BiC Cristal(tm) pen refill; 5 inches long and holding enough ink to last most users months or years.

Each of the photographs on this page shows one specific pen that's currently available. You can request a specific pen by giving me its number via the "Message Seller" option when you purchase. Alternatively, I'll choose a random pen for you.

Each of these pens is as unique as a fingerprint, and brings a small but lovely piece of the natural world to your desk.
