In cooperation with Pitcher Puzzles, I am proud to present David Pitcher’s Dave's Diamond.

From the designer:
There were a couple people who figured out how I made the puzzle, so it's time for the big reveal! The secret is that the core of the puzzle is a 2x2x2 in a bicone shape with rails to hold the outer pieces on. The core piece of the 2x2x2 has a handle sticking out of it that passes through one of the polar vertexes, acting as a switch to allow the 2x2x2 to rotate within the outer shell of parts. Here's a picture of the side of the puzzle that you never saw in the teaser video.
The puzzle works very nicely with good smooth movement. As you could see in the teaser video, I was able to throw the switch without giving the whole thing away. This mechanism has the benefit of being small in size, making the puzzle easy to play and affordable (for 3D printing). It is also very robust, since it is all based on a 2x2x2 mechanism. There are a couple of compromises that were made by using this construction. First and most obvious, you cannot turn just any axis at the outset. You need to pick one set of axes or another. The good thing is that this does not affect the playing of the puzzle in any substantial way, since even with a hypothetical "perfect" mechanism, once you start making moves on an axis of your choice, you're locked into that axis set anyway. So with this construction you just have to choose which set of axes first. The second compromise is that there are a couple of states that cannot be reached with this puzzle. However, both states are dead end moves that are of no utility since no moves can be made following them. So even with that hypothetical perfect mechanism, these states would be unusable. Since this is the case, this construction allows for a fully playable version of the puzzle! Many thanks to Matt Galla for helping to confirm all of this!
