1960 Teacher’s Diary, Handwritten Entries, National Blank Book Company, One-Year Diary

Entries in this 1960s diary were handwritten by a teacher who took a special interest in one of her students, named Eddie, who appears to have had behavior problems. She had witnessed his abuse by his grandparents after she had brought them some of his less-than-stellar school papers.

Her first entry reads: “…She – his grandmother – called the child in from play and give him the most merciless tong-lashing I have ever heard. The poor child melted, crying his heart out. She told him he wasn’t fit to sleep with pigs, that they wouldn’t let him eat with them anymore, or see any TV, or go out and play, that she wouldn’t buy him any more clothes, or anything, that he might get sent to the boy’s home. … She would whip him at 8 o’clock.”

She goes on in later entries to tell about his emotional breakdown and her emotional response to him and what she does to bring happiness to his life. She takes him on trips and to picnics, etc. “As we started for his home, he became more silent and tense and hoped we would go to my place first.”

Throughout the school year, Eddie has many behavior challenges and the teacher gets bad advice for handling him from the higher-ups. These and the teacher’s efforts to help him calm himself are documented in this diary.

There are 55 entries in this nearly 400-page diary. The front pages are an alphabetical listing of names and addresses and the end of the book had memorandum pages, earnings and tax pages, and monthly accounting pages. Five pages hold comics clipped from the newspaper. The red-covered diary is 5” wide by 9” tall and 1” thick.

CONDITION: All of the pages are intact. The pages are discolored where the newspaper clippings are inserted. The outer spine is disconnected on the top edge.
