Handwoven Sisal Laundry Basket: Color Block, Leather Handles

A woven laundry basket with handles that you can also use as an overnight bag, a beach bag and stylish bedroom storage. Deep and strong enough for storing logs by the fireplace yet equally soft and supple enough for bathroom or nursery storage, this grey colour block laundry basket can be put to use all over the home as your needs evolve and change.

Skilfully hand woven by a member of our partner weaving group in the Eastern Region of Kenya, this multi use basket is made from no less than forty balls of sisal. The stiff leaves of this Kenyan crop are harvested, rolled and dyed by hand before weaving can begin. These large storage baskets take up to six days of weaving to complete.

The women who weave these laundry baskets belong to the Kamba tribe - a community famous for their impressive basketry among other handicrafts. Farming is the main occupation of most Kamba households, but this can make for unpredictable living in times of drought. Basket weaving enables women to earn a reliable and flexible income from home, without impacting on their other responsibilities.
