Made of either Beavers Felt or Wool (not stated). Leather headband. Stiff brim. Original hat box and insert for proper storing. Rare and very collectable.
Hat Size: 7 (aprox. 21 1/2"-21 3/4"), 2" brim width, aprox. 4 1/2" dome height.
Box: 15" x 13" x 7 1/4" height.

The gentleman who wears the hat:
Edward Coke was a British soldier and politician during the mid 1800s. He commissioned the London hatmakers Thomas and William Bowler to design a close-fitting, low-crowned hat to protect his gamekeepers' heads from low-hanging branches while on horseback. When Coke arrived in London on December 17, 1849 to collect his hat he reportedly placed it on the floor and stamped hard on it twice to test its strength; the hat withstood this test and Coke paid 12 shillings for it. In accordance with Lock & Company's usual practice, the hat was called the "Coke" hat (pronounced 'cook') after the customer who had ordered it. This is most likely why the hat became known as the "Billy Coke" or "Billycock" hat in Norfolk. The style took a liking to and several hate makers adapted it, such as Dobbs. Well done Mr. Coke!
