This sculptural piece was part of a group that I made in collaboration with jeweller Sarah Parker-Eaton, inspired by an antique book of beautiful hand tinted prints of jellyfish kindly lent to us by biologist David Thomas.
These incredible images of creatures full of life, flowing lines, bulbous forms and intricate detailing led us to making a series of jellyfish pieces where we tried to capture some of their beauty in three dimensional sculptural forms.

This particular one was inspired by the jellyfish Rhizostoma - or as we affectionately began calling 'Chunky'! Often we combine a number of elements from various creatures together, but this one had a great form and proportion that we didn't want to alter.
It is one of the more technically difficult pieces that we have made together, challenging both of our skills to the limit. The silver 'petals at the bottom also add some movement to the piece as they are held on with tiny rings.

The main umbrella section is turned from sycamore, with a pattern carved into into the top surface and airbrushed a rich dark green and its underside textured with a pyrography tool - burning in fine lines resembling the gills on a muchroom (see the last picture of me pyrographing a box). The lower intricately carved section from boxwood - a very dense wood that allows for greater detail and strength airbrushed a deep red with acrylic inks. The bottom part is hand fabricated by Sarah from hallmarked silver.

The piece is 6 1/2 inches long (165mm).
