Item details

Height: 1.5 Inches; Width: 8 Inches

Carved from a burl taken from a fallen maple tree, this little bowl displays the beautiful and intricately convoluted grain pattern of burl wood in its interior, and rough, knobbly bark on its outside. Because burls are usually bowl-shaped, the entire outside of this bowl, except for the flattening of the bottom, is natural, with no manmade cuts. And because this bowl is carved rather than turned on a lathe, the inside of it also follows the natural, asymmetrical shape of the burl. The result is an object that comes almost directly from the creative forces of nature to your hands. My humble role as a craftsman was merely to uncover its inherent beauty.

8 inches in its longest dimension, about 5-1/2 inches wide and about 1-1/2 inches high (20 x 14 x 4 cm). Because there's a natural notch on one side, one use that suggested itself is a bowl for sugar cubes, with the tongs sitting neatly in that notch. But whether it's used for that, or to hold candies, or kept empty to better display its beauty, it's sure to be a source of joy and wonderment to everyone who sees it.
