2pc Cobalt Blue 20mm African Recycled Glass Bead (ZA1C)

Description: Beautiful cobalt blue African recycled glass bead measuring approx 20mm in diameter and 15-20mm long.
* Recycled glass beads are made by crushing old glass (from old windows, bottles, etc) into powder, which is then heated and poured into clay molds. A leaf stem is used to make the hole. As the beads are oven baked, the glass fuses and the stems burn away. This bead making technique has been used in Africa for centuries. It results in a beautiful, rough, primitive appearance with a texture similar to sea glass.

Quantity: 2 beads

Origin: Africa

What are trade beads?

Trade beads were used as currency in Africa for hundreds of years (even into the 20th century). The beads were produced in Europe and used by European travelers to facilitate transactions with native Africans for goods, services, and slaves. Africans collected these beads and used them for currency, wealth storage, and social status. Trade beads were highly coveted and often passed from generation to generation.

While the term “trade bead” technically refers to antique African-traded glass beads of European origin, other beads are loosely classified as trade beads, including reproduction trade beads and traditional African-style beads.

All trade beads, whether antique or modern, are characterized by an “imperfect” appearance. Authentic antique trade beads are usually scarred by time and have scratches, chips, and worn holes and edges. Reproduction trade beads often mimic these rough characteristics because they are made using the same primitive centuries-old techniques. Traditional African-style beads have charming “imperfections” that result from being created in small batches by hand.

I never clean any of the age off of the trade beads I sell…I’ll leave that up to you if you wish.
