This appears to be a probably rather rare Anne Fogarty petticoat or slip from her work with the lingerie firm Gracette in the mid-1950s.

When I found this, I thought it was heavily starched linen skirt, but when research revealed that Fogarty made petticoats of nylon "horsehair" which was meant to be uncrushable, it seemed that this must in fact be one of those! How super cool!

This slip has a whopping 12 gores for an unbeatable flaring shape. Indeed, Fogarty's designs were known for their "paper-doll" silhouette, and this petticoat will certainly help you create that look for yourself. What I find most interesting is the exposed zipper -- so beloved by the fashion people recently -- and proof that there is nothing new under the sun!

Marked "Anne Fogarty Enterprises; Gracette, Size 13"
Circa mid-50s (before 1957);
Made of ? (faux horsehair?) with lace at hem
Measures about 27 inches at the waist; about 28 inches long; and about 184 inches around the hem!

Condition: one light spot on the side; not noticeable due to the fall of the skirt; some wear on the top edge of the slip including a few pinholes and a 1/2 inch tear in the fabric.

"If I had to boil down my thinking about clothes into one word, that word would be—DISCIPLINE—of the mind, the body, and the emotions. DISCIPLINE makes you the woman you are rather than a hodgepodge of everyone else's ideas chosen without consideration of your own coloring and proportions." -- Anne Fogarty

Many thanks to FuzzyLizzie Vintage Clothing for information on Fogarty's work with Gracette:
