Description

This little black vintage purse is a hard-sider with thick, lush crushed velvet covering it. The bag has a rectangular, almost square, shape when viewed from the front and a triangular shape when viewed from the side. It sports a big beaded handle, which consists of a heavy and sturdy piece of wire in a u-shape which is strung with about 11 translucent, smoky, faceted black plastic beads. It also appears to have kitty cat ears from the front (or back) view! I imagine this was intentional, even though I did not notice it at first. It's a subtle, playful shape with a richly textured velvet covering it.

The crushed velvet is very thick - it feels amazing to the touch - and textured to catch the light from different angles. I lightened a couple of the photos to show the texture. The handbag features a handy shoulder strap that is long enough to wear cross body if you like. Just tuck the strap (a woven cord) away inside the bag if you are not using it. The purse closes with a magnetic snap.

The bottom of the bag has a seam where the velvet is sewn together. This may appear to be faded in the center seam in the photos, but that is not the case. In real life you cannot see the seam when you look at the bottom of the bag.

I'm imagining it's from the 80s, but would go well with a little black dress from the 50s or 60s. Or pair it with jeans and black velvet pumps.

VINTAGE NOTE: A white tag prominently visible inside bag gives the patent number for the magnetic snap. That patent was issued in 1984, and since companies usually make a bigger deal about patents when they are pending or recently issued, I would date the purse from the mid-to-late 80s.

Measures:

7"L x 2.75"W x 7"H bottom of purse
5.5"L x 2.75" W x 7"H top of purse
(top of purse - where the handle is attached - is smaller and gets gradually wider towards the bottom. See the front views in photos.)

Top of the purse opens to about 2 inches when unsnapped.

Condition NOTE: there is a smudge or anomaly or a little worn spot - not sure the best way to describe it - in the velvet on one side of the bag near the center top. It blends in so well with the texture of the bag that you must hold it at a certain angle to see it. I don't think it takes away from the playful richness of the bag. I am not venturing to attempt removing it for fear of ruining the bag over something barely visible. Perhaps a bit of diluted laundry soap and a suede brush would do the trick, making the bag utterly perfect, but again I am wary of trying this because the purse is so great as it is. :)

There are no pulled threads or visible wear on the body of the bag. Handle shows that the bag has been carried a few times but there are no scratches or scars on the beads.

Items are carefully packaged in a very sturdy box (for shoes, handbags, and jewelry) or a padded mailer (dresses and other clothing) with lots of padding in either case! Packaging and stuffing is usually recycled, for example a re-used Amazon, USPS or FedEx box, wrapped with butcher paper when needed. Contact me if you would like a brand new box or packaging, if the item is to be a gift for example.

Additional policies

VINTAGE NOTE: As we who love them know, vintage pieces are special. They bring us style from another era and give us a unique look that can't be found at the mall clone stores. They are often wearable works of art. They also often carry marks from use or even from just being in storage, which can add to their style and give them character. Make sure that you are comfortable with this idea when purchasing vintage to wear or collect. I will do my best to describe and photograph well for you.

If you have a question about the condition or the size of an item, contact me and I will be glad to send/post more pictures or take more measurements, so that you know what you're getting!

SIZING NOTE: To ensure you get the best out of your item, please be sure to compare the listing size and measurements with your own size to get the best fit. Vintage sizing can be quite different than what we are familiar with today. It's often best to measure a similar item of your own clothing that fits the way you prefer, to do a comparison - this can be more accurate than measuring your body, since you may forget to add an inch or two for wiggle-room.

WISH LIST: Is there a vintage item you have never been able to find? Let me know - I may have it in my yet-to-be-listed pile! I would be glad to post it here for your consideration.

Vintage-INSPIRED: We have lovely brand new and gently used items with a vintage 'look and style' available elsewhere on the web. Contact for more info: fadaddict [at] gmail [dot] com.
