~Temari is a folk art that was introduced from China to Japan over 500 years ago! Traditionally, the temari were constructed from the scraps of fabric and thread of old kimonos. The balls were originally made into play toys for children but soon became an art form with stitching becoming more decorative and detailed. Today, temari are regarded as a valued piece of Japanese history, and make cherished gifts as well!~

Each "mari" base for my temaris are made from scratch using plastic bags and wrapped with acrylic yarn and then wrapped with sewing thread. Then I hand stitch the designs on the ball with cotton embroidery thread.
