A Late Nineteenth Century Edition of Lew Wallace's Exciting Novel About Ancient Israel, Rome and the Life of Jesus Christ.

Many consider "Ben Hur" to be one of the greatest movies ever made. Does it not follow that such a great movie could only come from an equally great book?

"Ben Hur", the novel, was an instant hit, just like the movie starring Charleton Heston was an instant hit a little over a half century later. And why should it be a surprise? Its themes were universal; its plot line known by millions in their hearts. It is a novel of grandeur, of passions, with exciting, never to be forgotten scenes - the fateful sea battle, the amazing and heart-pounding chariot race, the pitiful scenes in the leper colony, the effect that one man - Jesus - could have on others. Lew Wallace recreated a complete world. Jerusalem and Rome come to life in his pages, as much as the vibrant human characters do. It remains a great novel.

This is a very early printing of the book, clothed in a binding made familiar to the readership of the late Victorian era. It's dedication page is, of course the revised version as dictated by General Wallace: "To the Wife of My Youth Who Still Abides With Me."
